How to Grow First Early Seed Potatoes:

How to Prepare.

Seed Potatoes can be potted in containers or planted directly outside. The ground should be well dug and ferilised before planting.

Chitting.

Allow time to 'chit' or sprout before planting. Place in shallow trays (egg boxes are ideal) with any shoots facing upwards. Place trays in the light and protect from frost and extreme heat.

Outdoor Planting.

Plant out in good weather during March and April. Ensuring the shoots are facing upwards, plant 25cm (10in) apart and 10cm (4in) deep. Allow 60cm (24in) between rows.

Indoor Planting.

Plant February onwards, moving outdoors after all risk of frost has passed. Plant 2 seed potatoes per 30cm (12in) pot.

Care.

Water well during dry periods. Once shoots are 20cm (8in) pile earth around the stems (tubers) to block out light.

Harvesting.

Lift when big enough to eat, normally after 9-12 weeks.
