Elephant Garlic is not a true garlic and is actually closely related to the leek, however, it is grown just the same as garlic and has the same culinary uses. Elephant Garlic, is so called as it produces jumbo bulbs up to 4in across.

The flavour of Elephant garlic is sweet and mild, unlike the more familiar kinds, giving it many more culinary uses. It can even be sliced raw and added to salads. The large and juicy cloves are also lovely when roasted. It is highly ornamental too with beautiful flower heads up to 5ft/1.5m tall.

Elephant Garlic is great for those who want a milder, sweeter taste.

Plant from September to November and harvest June to July, or when required. Garlic can be planted in both the Autumn, for an earlier crop, and Spring for latter cropping.

Marco Garlic is a soft neck type garlic bulb which produces cloves which are easily stored and split for cooking.

Marco produces bulbs which have a distinctive strong flavour and can be used fresh or they can be stored for up to a year and eaten both raw or cooked. The cloves from Marco are particularly easy to peel.

This variety of Garlic is a favourite of gardeners wanting a strong garlic taste and a bulb that will store for up to 12 months.

Solent Wight is a popular garlic that's well adapted to the British climate and gives a good crop of large bulbs with plump tasty cloves. Expect to start harvesting in July from a November planting - once the foliage starts to turn yellow, dry and store as you would onions.

Solent White is an excellent storing garlic with a good strong flavour. A bulb will provide between 12 and 14 individual cloves.

If you only grow one garlic this year, then Solent White is the one to grow.

How to Grow Garlic Bulbs

Site:

Choose a site with well drained soil which has been previuosly treated with a general purpose feriliser.

Plant:

In Autumn, plant September to October. In Spring, plant February to March. Spacing: 5cm (2in) deep and 25cm (9in) apart.

Cultivation:

Split the bulb into individual cloves and plant as above. Garlic needs little attention other than weeding and hoeing to aerate the soil. Water if conditions become too dry.

Harvest and Storage:

Lift when foliage turns yellow and allow to dry out before storing in a frost free place in trays or nets.
